“Don’t get paid enough for this $$,” Jones muttered under his breath as he caught his breath behind the pillar he was hiding behind. He had taken a few dings on his uniform but his bangle had held up.
“We’re fine,” Oswald said, his own uniform had several holes in it. His chest was riddled with bruises from the rounds that had struck him. He had taken a good deal of the fire and he felt sore, but he wasn’t going to let it show. He had some elixir he could chug if he really needed to.
He spotted the bloody spot on Thalia’s leg.”Your bangle might be malfunctioning, ma’am,” Oswald said as he approached her. He pulled a potion energy drink from his belt, leaned down and started pouring it over one of her wounds. Might have been a strange move but most knew that the drink was good for more than quenching thirst, the fizz was practically peroxide strength. “I’ve got a spare if you need a new one.”

Thalia hobbled to the door and prepared herself for whatever was behind it. She was coated in a thin layer of perspiration that caused her bangs to stick to her forehead but she looked at GAWAIN with confusion as he stopped to place a hand on her shoulder.
“I’m fine.” She responded without pause before glancing over her shoulder at the troopers and Ajax who came bounding over from his hiding place on the elevator.
The SOLDIER inhaled sharply through gritted teeth as a sharp sting nearly knocked her off her feet.
“Get offa me, perv!” Thalia reached up to backhand Sergeant Oswald away before finally realizing that she had been shot. The SOLDIER considered taking a minute to sit down but from her experience it was best to just push through it. If she stopped now, she might not get back up.
“Oh!” She exhaled. “Well… that’s just one of those things. I’ll walk it off.”
GAWAIN's arm reflexively moved to catch Thalia Melpomene's own, not too eager to possibly see her backhand Sergeant Oswald's head off his shoulders just because he tried to be nice. The strike stung at his palm despite catching her at the wrist; quite strong, this one.
Regardless, competency and solidarity were both rare traits among troopers; no need to discourage either.
"Very well then." He said, smile still in place but brow tilted, his hand slowly letting go of her wrist. "I trust you to know your own body better than any of us."
Not more he could do- without possibly wounding her pride anyway. Perhaps not something he should prioritize in an operation such as this. He turned his gaze towards Jones in the background, nodding at both him and the Sergeant before gesturing them to take their positions at the sides of the doors.
"This operation is indeed above either of your paygrades- I'll see to it that you all see a commission for your work, once we are through this." This was all he could do to hopefully keep the trooper's morale up- Good pay was a better motivation than most other things.
Finally, he moved to stand by the doors once again, nodding at Thalia to take her stance before swiping his keycard over the lock.
The doors swung open to-
Nothing in particular. No row of turrets awaited them, nor hi-jacked security measures. Thankfully.
That did not mean there were no problems, however. There was something nobody in any sort of power-plant ever wanted to see on the plethora of screens of the main control room-
The color of red. Bright, and so strong it painted the otherwise green metallic atmosphere into a crimson.
"Oh dear. That can't be good." Uttered the blonde, wide eyed, smile taut, as he marched into the room.

Gabriel's face immediately grew pale and then pink as the 1st Class saved him from Thalia. He jumped up and backpedaled several feet, bringing his hand up to cover his mouth. He was speechless. He turned his head over to peer down at the reactor several floors below.
He only turned his head again when GAWAIN offered them additional compensation. He shot a glare towards Jones and sighed before turning back to approach the door with them. Jones gave Oswald a small nervous smile.
"Well that doesn't look good," Jones said as they looked over the room full of red screens.
Oswald stepped past the group, carefully avoiding getting near Thalia in the process. He started looking at the wiring behind the consoles.
"About the commission," Oswald began,"You can give mine to Hobbs' family...
...and I don't see any signs of tampering back here."

Thalia’s wrist was halted on the follow through, sparing Oswald a heavy crack across the helmet. The SOLDIER tugged against the restraint before glancing over her shoulder at her commanding officer. Her arm went slack in his hold. She didn’t want to come across as insubordinate but the moment he loosened his grip she jerked her hand away and rubbed her wrist as if his hand had been a shackle.
“I wouldn’t have really hit him.” She lied to Gawain before lumbering off towards the door. Thalia had been startled. She didn’t like being touched all sneaky like that. It was a perfectly natural response but now she was embarrassed. That made her angry.
She wanted to punch something or hack it up into little bits but there was just an empty room with a bunch of computers up ahead. The SOLDIER wandered the room, flipping keyboards with the tip of her sword and taking advantage of the flashing red glow of the screens around them to throw an occasional sideways glare at the handsy Sergeant.
As she made her way to the far end of the room she had to admit… whatever he did had worked. She was barely in any pain at all despite just having been shot a few moments ago. She glanced over again to see what he was doing and this time her expression was a marginally softer. She cleared her throat awkwardly, “Um… I- My dad was a grunt too. He died when I was real young. I just- I want you to know that I’m gonna make sure Hobbs’ family is taken care of… after this.”
That was about as close to an apology as Oswald was ever going to get. She didn’t go around broadcasting her past to just anybody. It was a sign of trust that she opened up now. Hopefully, the trooper would get that and stop being weird.
She leaned against one of the desks and something metallic fell onto the floor. Thalia glanced down to see what she had knocked over and it got up and started skittering across the floor. A little robotic spider-type creature.
Despite the grim, red atmosphere around them, GAWAIN could only smile at the Sergeant Oswald and Thalia Melpomene 's little exchange. The Sergeant would receive his commission- as would Hobbs' family, among other things he would arrange for. It was a pity this was not something that could be done for every trooper that fell in battle, but...
He shook his head. No time to think on that. They needed to deal with this now.
He approached the main console imperiously, overriding its password request with his Executive Keycard before narrowing his eyes at the graphics and words that appeared on the screen.
He... had almost no idea of what most of this even meant.
Other than 'Danger, Meltdown imminent!', that is.
He tried to utilize the console... but while the keycard scanner had worked, the controls refused to get any reaction out of it. Which meant-
"No choice." He said after a moment, rising from the console before turning to face the other three. "Someone needs to go into the Mako Reactor's main generator and perform a manual deactivation."
He gestured towards the glass directly in front of the console, which granted them a visage of what awaited them. Long metal railings and tall ladders slowly led down into a single, main railing, which hung over a pool of pure, concentrated Mako.
The inside console that would allow one of them such a thing could be seen at the very end of that railing. It felt somehow ominous, looking at it.
The blonde man began to rummage through the many cabinets, before finally producing a thick looking book and placing it atop the console. He had noticed Thalia's find- but there was little to waste on it. If their little hacker wanted to spectate, they were welcome to.
Even if GAWAIN preferred performing before a live audience.
"Someone needs to stay here and instruct us on the process." He said, "The rest of us must go inside; one of us will deactivate the console. The other two will have to deal with most dangerous of the Reactor's security measures: The Guard Scorpion."
Pity that none of them possessed thunder materia. It would have been rather useful for this particular effort.
"So... Any Volunteers?" He asked cheerfully. "Naturally, I'll be going inside. SOLDIERs cannot be mako poisoned. The time limit for you-" He said to Oswald and Jones, "Would be about 20 minutes, give or take."

Oswald shook his head and waved his hand back and forth to dismiss the necessity of her gesture. He had no verbal response he could muster and was thankful that the 1st Class had begun speaking.
“I’ll read the book,” Jones said as quickly as GAWAIN stopped speaking. Oswald shot him a glare.
“Good, that is what your orders were going to be,” he said gritting his teeth, obviously a bit frustrated with the private trying to call the shots. Thalia wasn’t the only one whose blood was boiling.
He tapped a button on the side of his helmet and spoke with Jones through the comm to do a quick radio check between the both of them. He wasn’t thrilled to rely on a private to read the book for him, but hopefully Jones would have a better chance of surviving here than he did in there.
He’d been around mako before. He knew the risks involved. There wasn’t time for hazard gear and it was going to get in his way. He didn’t have anything else to say. He approached the exit and looked back at the two SOLDIERS expectantly.

“Did you just give me permission to smash a Guard Scorpion?” Thalia looked up from plucking the last leg off a mechanical spider the size of her palm. The excitement in her voice couldn’t be disguised by her gravely tone. Scorpions were expensive machines. They weren’t something the company usually wanted to waste even during her SOLDIER training. She’d seen them in action before but she never expected to have the opportunity to fight one.
The SOLDIER watched the exchange between Oswald and Jones with a little snort. Jones was a cry baby but she liked his spunk. She was glad somebody volunteered to guide them. Thalia wasn’t a bookish type and the technical manual looked like complete gibberish to her.
It seemed like it would be pretty dangerous for either of the troopers to continue on. Sergeant Oswald seemed pretty competent but he was no super soldier and she still felt a little bad for how she’d treated him earlier. She looked at GAWAIN and made a suggestion, “I can take on the bot alone if necessary.”
Following his words, GAWAIN stared at Jones specifically for a full 3 seconds, as if sizing him up, head tilting slightly before he patted the man's shoulder gently, smiling.
"I am surprised you would take on this job- but also glad there's someone willing to do it so readily!" He said with palpable honesty, eyesmiling cheerfully, "After all, this may well be the most important of all jobs here!"
"Even a single, tiny mistake could turn the entirety of Sector 3 into a nuclear wasteland at this point- we are about to go directly into the inner mechanisms of the reactor." He said as he flipped through the book until arriving at the proper section, before handing it to the private. "We- and all of Sector 3- are in your capable hands, Private Jones."
With that said, the man towards Thalia, snorting. He tilted a brow at the mech-spider being dismembered in her grip, but ignored it for now; no time to get side-tracked.
"Don't sound so excited, Captain. I assure you, this will be far from a pleasant fight-" He said, rolling his shoulders as he turned on his heel to face away from the group, moving towards the doors on the other side of the room. They would need to walk through a couple of halls and go through a isolated chamber before finally going into the reactor.
"After all, I'll be handling the fixing of the reactor along with Private Jones personally. You and the Sergeant will be dealing with the Scorpion on your own. And let me tell you- they are very tough customers, if memory serves me right." He had only fought a few during training about 2 decades ago; he imagined they were even tougher these days.
He didn't trust anyone else to do it while under the constant pressure of possibly getting atomized by a stray blast from the defense bot. He had only met this group, after all. They all seemed capable, but he couldn't trust them this much just yet, unfortunately.
They soon reached the isolated chamber- hazmat suits intended to protect those going into the reactor could be found all over the place. He glanced at the Sergeant, cocking his head slightly in askance. It was his choice if he wanted to wear one.
Needless to say, they were heavy, hindered movement and visibility, and were uncomfortable to wear, let alone fight in.
But they also prevented him from catching mako poisoning, so... his choice, really.

Oswald looked at the hazmat suits but ultimately decided against it. Instead he pulled something from a pouch that hung from his left side. It was a black mask with goggles that was specially fitted to his helmet, he put it on and twisted the filters into place to conceal the lower part of his face. It wouldn’t protect his skin from the exposure, but he wouldn’t breath as much of the toxin into his lungs while they worked.
“Ready at your command,” Oswald said in a muffled mumble through the mask. While he waited for things to get moving he changed the clip of his weapon so that he’d be fully loaded and ready for a fight.

“Really?” Thalia sounded even more exhilarating than before. It was sure to be a thrill if even GAWAIN thought they were tough. “What are we waiting for then?”
The SOLDIER flashed a cocky grin at Sergeant Oswald. Maybe the first real smile he’d seen from her that night. She was pretty sure they could handle the Scorpion on their own. The Sergeant was tougher than most of the troops she’d worked with in the past. He seemed like he could handle himself in a fight.
She made her way to the end of the room and waited for Gawain to open the next door. She thought about just kicking it in but if it was thick enough to hold back radiation from mako… she didn’t want to embarrass herself.
With Sergeant Oswald having finished his preparations, the SOLDIER nodded back.
"Nothing at all." Responded the blonde to Thalia Melpomene as he made his way towards the doors, card in hand. As both of his companions readied themselves, the man brought his keycard to the scan one last time. The sound of hydraullics filled the air as the doors automatically swung open.
Immediately, the smell of mako filled the air and the hairs on their naked skin stood on end. One could feel the goosebumps spreading over their skin as the radiation hit them. For the Sergeant, this was practically a warning. The clock is ticking.
"Let's go!" Ordered the man intensely as he marched into the reactor, the sound of his heavy steps touching upon the metallic floors filling the air. They were all very high in the air- it would be a good number of ladders down before they reached the core-
Or so it would have been, had the blonde man not reached for the nearest railing and swung himself over it. Gold materia shining bright in his plate armor, the man's silhouette cut through the mako in the air as he fell the rest of the way down and landed on the last level below, feet touching the metal floors below. One reckless move and the man may have dropped straight into the Mako soup further below.
He looked up.
"Keep it distracted!" He said as he sprinted for the core.
... It?
The thunderous sound of steel on steel suddenly rang through the air. A shadow was cast over the entirety of the reactor's contents as something loudly moved up high. That light being blocked- that was moonlight!
Anyone that looked up towards the Reactor's Chimney opening, would see a strange, terrifyingly spider-like silhouette.
As all three pairs of eyes fell upon it, its own suddenly shone to life, red dots glaring down to the members of Shin-Ra from high above...
Before the metallic clang suddenly filled the air once again, louder and more frantic, the black silhouette becoming larger and larger as it descended upon them with an uproarious screech.

"Ma'am?" Oswald asked with a bit of confusion when she smiled at him, but things kicked off with GAWAIN and he lost his focus on her. “Should have saved the RPG,” Oswald said through the muffled gas mask. Even with the respirator the area had a heaviness to it paired with a light prickle against his pores. He knew his limits, he would not follow GAWAIN in his heroic jump, instead he ran to the nearest ladder and slid down the sides of it.
He would continue his run until he spotted a wire that was running down a wall adjacent to the reactor. He was sure he might get written up for it if there were any engineers to complain, but with their absence Oswald grabbed it and used it to rappel down towards the SOLDIER.
As soon as Oswald saw the machine up above them, he pointed his rifle up and began firing at the robot with a spray of bullets. Hoping to get its attention, he ran the opposite direction of GAWAIN and took a knee near several barrels.

Thalia remained still on the balcony and watched as the scorpion approached, demonstrating an absurd amount of restraint for the normally rash soldier. She couldn’t help but appreciate the fine distraction Sergeant Oswald was providing as a spray of bullets assaulted the bot’s underbelly.
A golden orb in her possession glowed brightly as she took a running leap onto the things back and jammed both blades into one of its red eyes and held on for dear life. She would dismantle this thing or die trying. Preferably the former.
Gawain had moved towards the reactor core swiftly and without glancing back, speaking to Jones through the comms as he slid under neath the console and ripped the metal plating covering its inner workings before he began to work.
Thalia's brave attempt at mounting the machine went acknowledged but otherwise rejected, the giant Scorpion's tail whipping like lightning to smack aside the SOLDIER trying to go for a backstab, its metallic frame descending upon the reactor with the screech of steel on steel as it spiked legs ripped into the walls.
The bullets from the sergeant's rifle bounced harmlessly off the machine's steel plating- but its advanced AI shone through as it visibly shifted to place its armor in between Sergeant Oswald's shooting and its joints. Even if he couldn't quite make direct contact, it seemed like it had protecting its relatively soft joints from small projectiles as a priority.
Perhaps a good way for the sergeant to seize some manner of control over the machine and assist the SOLDIER.
She certainly seemed to be in need of some assistance, if only because her earlier stunt had turned the machine's attention almost entirely on her.
Its tail flashed through the air like a guillotine, descending upon Thalia Melpomene to try and stab straight through her!
