He's the sort of person that still believes in moogles.
Name: Halwen Breeve (Banjo Hal)
Age: 17
Faction: Avalanche
Weapon: Beatbox Glove
Appearance: A pink-haired teenager with an underplate complexion and blue-green eyes suggestive of mako treatments.
About: Halwen grew up a chocobo farmboy in the humble hinterlands of the Kalm Region, where the air is still fresh and the water clean enough to drink without filters. He was raised with a thirst for music, and wherever he went his family’s old banjo went with him. He could play for hours, and often didn’t put the instrument down until his fingers bled. Before he was old enough to ride a bike he could play all the classics and the current hits, and before he lost his last baby tooth he was something of a local legend, renowned for his masterful banjo and mellifluous voice. Many local pubs hosted his performances, where he was introduced as Banjo Hal or sometimes (with appropriate cheese) Banjo the Kid. As long as he got his chores done on the chocobo farm, he could play all he wanted.
This idyllic childhood ended with a bang.
It was the troubles with Wutai. The Shin-Ra Electric Power Company was struggling to put the finishing touch on Wutai, where the ghosts of the war haunted the corporate occupation in the form of the burgeoning rebel group AVALANCHE. One day, these troubles came to the quiet countryside Halwen called home.
Halwen still remembered the fireball. He remembered the smoke, and the helicopters. He remembered being dragged from his bed with the rest of his family and loaded aboard the Gelnika. Most of all, he remembered the Shin-Ra Trooper’s boot that crushed his banjo as he was being carried away.
He never saw his family again. Showing the signs of materia affinity at a young age, the Science Department took Halwen into legal custody, and began to develop him in Project BARD into a potential asset model that would run in parallel to the Makonoid experiments. These experiments were focused on the relationship between the subconscious, unconsciousness, and the lifestream with a particular interest in music, dreams, and illusions — where Halwen’s strong musical ability played a key role. Procedures included not only mako showering but also the direct transfer of a low purity mako solution into Halwen's bloodstream. Musical frequencies were simulated during his mako baths, to determine what, if any feedback effect they may have. Attempts at dream infiltration and manipulation were made with modified versions of Seal materia, but none were entirely successful.
As the experiments progressed, the care of Halwen declined into little more than an afterthought. He had virtually no friends, besides the occasional curious scientist. Though Project BARD gave Halwen strange new magic manipulation that was considered atypical, and a new materia pathway was discovered, the experiments were ultimately rejected by the Science Department leadership as costly and ineffective. Halwen, being treated as little more than a labrat at this point, was transferred to the Weapons Development Department to be incorporated into a machine matrix. His left hand was augmented to accept materia before an appeal by a mysterious individual within the Science Department caused this order to be rescinded, and Halwen was eventually shoehorned into a Public Security Division unit training in Midgar.
Unsuited for military life, lacking viciousness and patriotic fervor, Halwen suffered in this new role. Slipping away during leave, Halwen fled to the Sector 6 slums, where he eked out a threadbare living as a minstrel in Wall Market, playing the spoons. Eventually, he scrounged enough gil to buy a new banjo, one made of recycled materials. Banjo in hand, he now tours the slums with some small fame.

During his time in the underworld of the underplate, his fear and resentment of Shin-Ra grew into hatred. Reaching out to seedy Wall Market contacts, he finds and joins the Cosmo Canyon cell of Avalanche operating within the rotting pizza. There, with his augmented hand and strange abilities, he hopes to play the dirge of Shin-Ra.
