Heyo everybody!
Halwen having a gun got me thinking -- what if he had a bazooka instead?
And by that I mean, how can we best handle damage, RPishly? Obviously, getting shot with a gun in the face IRL would hurt a lot. But in the FF7 world (both Remake and original game) getting shot with a gun in the face or elsewhere doesn't seem to have the same effect -- at least not during gameplay, where most the action takes place.
Same with a bazooka. Or getting blown up. Or getting slashed with a big sword. Characters in this universe both in cutscenes and in gameplay routinely take hits that would kill a real person 100 times over.
But how can we handle this in a way that doesn't come across as totally ridiculous?
How Armor Could be RPed
Fans might remember bangles serving as the main armor style of the game. What good does a little bracelet on your arm do against that bazooka? Why is a Shin-Ra Alpha bangle so much better than a Bronze Bangle when they're both tiny pieces of arm jewelry? It doesn't make any sense. A tiny piece of armor can't protect you against a bazooka, can it?
Maybe it can. What if armor in the FF7-verse is merely a medium for the strong electromagnetic fields it produces? What if that Bronze Bangle is actually producing a glaze of protective energy that shields your body from head to toe?
Some shields could be stronger than others. Some could be smarter than others. Some could respond better to magic rather than physical attacks. And they wouldn't be invincible. Being a sort of glaze, it could dampen impacts without utterly dismissing them. Getting shot with a big bullet might still make you bleed or break bones if your armor isn't up to par, but it need not rip through you.
What do yall think?
