Why did you decide to leave Kalm?

Midgar was a place that celebrated defilement, all that vileness and suffering covered up behind a mask of glamour. You were soft and gentle - the kindest boy I knew. It was no place for someone like you.

I wish you had given up and turned tail when you saw what was underneath the veil. But you were always smart as a whip, and - for whatever reason - you persevered. That kind of tenacity that was going to get you noticed sooner or later. I had prayed - futilely - that it wouldn't have been by the wrong people.

When you got your current job, you told your parents you were just a paper-pusher - some financing manager under the development committee. I guess the suit had sold that lie well enough. They were too proud and too relieved to realise that you know next to nothing about finances. What will their faces be like when you disappear forever - your death some mild inconvenience that was long expected by the people who exploit you?

I wish you had become a SOLDIER instead. At least then I would have read about you in the papers. At least then, even with your hands no less bloodied than they are now, your glory would have been real.

What do you think when you tell another lie? What sort of thoughts flash across your mind when you facilitate another kidnapping, or take another life? Underneath that porcelain smile and that wit, that attitude that made it seem like you hardly ever cared, is there an ounce of regret over what you have become?

Perhaps it would be easier for you if there wasn't. Perhaps it is better to believe that the boy I once knew is long gone.
