Name: Artorius Leonhardt
Age: 41
Faction: Avalanche
Weapon: Long sword
Appearance: Standing at six feet tall with an athletic, mesomorphic build, Leonhardt can inadvertently cast an imposing presence to those smaller than him. The scar traveling from his left cheek across his lip and ending at his chin does little to help first impressions. He often keeps his hood up while out in public for the comfort of others, despite his protestations that such isn’t the case.
His military upbringing shines brightest in his aesthetics, choosing pragmatic function over form. From bottom to top, Leonhardt wears the standard issue combat boots one is given when they join SOLDIER. His black cargo pants have built-in knee pads and are tucked into his boots. They kept close to the body by grey compression bands, all held up by a belt around the waist. Secured on the belt and fastened around the right thigh sits a medium sized red pouch made to hold and pad potions and ethers. Three smaller pouches sit on the left hip, and a flat pouch at the small of his back for maps and documents. On the chest, Leonhardt wears a wine red sleeveless turtleneck under a black bulletproof vest. A red bandanna is tied loosely round his neck. A hooded coat sits atop his equipment to lessen suspicion as well as keep attention off his face. On his back rests the standard issue long sword all SOLDIERs are trained with. Lastly, his hands are protected by black gloves reach that reach up to mid-forearms. The gloves are padded with metal on the knuckles and the back of the hand.
About:
Personality: While seemingly standoffish, Leonhardt has a deep compassion for all living creatures, including the very planet. He has a bad habit of not speaking if he feel it would add nothing to the conversation. Because of this, he tends to abruptly end conversation, or walk away without any notice. This rude tendency is juxtaposed by his patience for sharing information or knowledge.
History: Born and raised in the upper plate of Sector 7, thanks to his mother being a career Shin-Ra solider, Leonhardt always had a fascination with the mako reactors that breathed life into Midgar. The concept of a limitless source of energy only became more of an interest as he grew, so much so that he applied as was granted an internship at Shin-Ra HQ. That and more was lost, however when his mother was branded a defector and traitor during first year of the Wutai War. As a result he and his father was cast out into the slums below. The heartbreak was too much for his father, who was left bedridden in a catatonic state after the ordeal.
Taking what little he could, Leonhardt was able to find an apartment on the first floor of the Stargazer Heights. To make ends meet, he took a job with the Neighborhood Watch, who, upon hearing his story, offered to assist in whatever ways they could. During the day, much of his mind was occupied with scouting and surveying Scrabyard Boulevard, but when the chores and errands were done, and his father no longer needed tending, his thoughts would wander to dark places. To distract himself, Leonhardt would have hours long conversations with the many members of the Neighborhood Watch who dabbled or studied planetology. Despite this, a deep rage grew within the boy, taking form as a reckless forward drive. To him, his mother defecting made no sense. He would know the truth.
The war was still raging when Leonhardt came of age. He wasted no time and applied to join the military. With luck, he’d be shipped off to Wutai where he can begin to clear his mother’s name. To his surprise, he was found to be a prime candidate for SOLIDER. The soul-crushing training, injections, the expectations. Leonhardt pushed forward, and eventually earned the title of SOLIDER, Third Class. It was a proud moment for Leonhardt. He was quickly shipped off to Wutai to support the main Shin-Ra army.
It was during this time that Leonhardt found the truth of his mother’s death. In a moment of compassion, his mother tended to the wounds of an enemy solider. While together, the two enemies stoke, and she was made aware of the threat that the mako reactors were, though she could not fathom the scope of the impact. When she approached her superiors about the information she’d obtained, she was arrested and sent away. Where “away” was remained a mystery. His progress was cut short, however, when his superior was killed in action, forcing Leonhardt to take command.
Despite fighting a war he no longer believed in, he felt it was his duty to see to it that those under him made it back home. It was during this time, however, that a mass exodus of SOLIDER troops began. This lead to Leonhardt being promoted to SOLDIER, Second Class. Not long after, the war ended in a cease fire. Leonhardt took this opportunity to return home. With so many leaving there post, he could slip between the cracks. Just another SOLDIER missing in action.
Upon his return home, Leonhardt discovered that his father had died before he had even finished training. Something broke within Leonhardt, and felt he understood his father’s pain. His rage mixed with bitter loss, and Leonhardt just left. He’ll say it was for a “long time” but when his feet could no longer walk, he found himself in Cosmo Canyon. There he was tended to and nourished by the locals, learned of the planet, and regained a sense of purpose once again. He felt he needed to fight back against Shin-Ra, not just for himself and his family, but for the greater world.
