How Magic Works
If you've played Final Fantasy VII you may be familiar with the basic premise of the magic found in the site. While not a clone of the games we do follow the idea of taking orbs called materia and embedding them in weapons and armor to utilize magic.
During character creation you determine the tier of magic (Figure A) that your character has access to, if any at all. You can utilize powers from materia at your tier level or below.
Some magic is so powerful that it has a cooldown. At the end of each combat round your character gains 1 ATB and can have up to 2 stored. When you use a spell that requires ATB, you do not gain ATB that round. If a spell does not list an ATB cost then it can be cast freely. If you have spells that use ATB, please mark your ATB total in a OOC note on your posts when in a player vs player combat: (0 ATB, 1 ATB, or 2 ATB).
What if I Don't Have Any Magic Ability
If you are Magic Tier 0 then you can't cast spells directly. You can, however, link your equipment with support materia in order to add elements and status effects to them. Even if you don't use magic linking support materia is one of the main ways you will progress your character to counter the magic of others. You may also take an interest in command materia, which doesn't need magic skill to use.

Materia Slots
Each character has two rows of materia. The top row has materia that is equipped in the weapon: defined as the offensive slot (Figure B), the bottom row has materia equipped in a bracelet or armor: defined as the defensive slot (Figure C).
You can see someone's materia by moving your mouse over the hover image to the left of their post. If you mouse over a slot it will tell you what is equipped to it.
When you purchase materia slots, you decide if the slots are in your offense or defensive row. Placement only matters for those using support materia to amplify their weapons or armor, which is further described by those materia in the shop.
