Name: Madelyn Wrynn
Age: 39
Faction: Shin-Ra | Soldier Second Class
Weapon: Staff
About:
Personality:
Madelyn is a true team player, and she recognizes that that means listening to other peoples’ opinions, even when they contradict her own. She will admit she doesn’t have all the answers, and is receptive to dissent, so long as it remains constructive. The one thing that galls her the most is the idea of letting down a person or cause she believes in. If it’s possible, she can always be counted on to see it through. Charm and popularity are qualities Madelyn has in spades. She instinctively knows how to capture an audience, and pick up on mood and motivation in ways that allows her to communicate with reason, emotion, passion, restraint – whatever the situation calls for. A talented imitator, Madelyn’s able to shift her tone and manner to reflect the needs of the audience, while still maintaining her own voice. Uniting these qualities is her unyielding desire to do good in and for her community, be it in her own home or the global stage. Warm and selfless, Madelyn genuinely believes that if she can just bring people together, they can do a world of good.
Madelyn can be caught off guard as she finds that, through circumstance or nature, or simple misunderstanding, people fight against her and defy the principles she’s adopted, however well-intentioned they may be. She’s more likely to feel pity for this opposition than anger, and can earn a reputation of naïveté. She has a tendency to bury herself in her hopeful promises, feeling others’ problems as her own and striving hard to meet her word. If she isn’t careful, she can spread herself too thin, and be left unable to help anyone. While receptive to criticism, seeing it as a tool for leading a better team, it’s easy for Madelyn to take it a little too much to heart. Her sensitivity to others means that she sometimes feels problems that aren’t her own and tries to fix things she can’t fix, worrying if she’s doing enough. She defines her self-esteem by whether she is able to live up to her ideals, and sometimes asks for criticism more out of insecurity than out of confidence, always wondering what she could do better. If she fails to meet a goal or to help someone she said she’d help, her self-confidence will undoubtedly plummet.
History:
Madelyn was not the child her parents had been hoping for, for one simple reason; she was a girl. They had already had three girls before Madelyn and had been hoping desperately for a little boy. Her father was a highly ranked member of the Shin-ra Army and had wanted a son to follow him into the military so was disappointed with having yet another daughter. As much as he was disappointed though he couldn't help but adore the little girl and would come to dote on her. They were shocked to realize that she had been born with segmented hetero-chromatic hair with most of her hair being white-blonde with one patch of a more golden blonde at the front of her scalp since no one on either side of her family had presented with this rare hereditary condition, that they knew of. She was showing signs of her high level of intelligence early in her formative years, hitting most of her milestones earlier than most, particularly tasks involving cognitive ability. By the time she was seven it was clear she fell firmly in the realms of being a tomboy, not caring for all the frills and lace that her mother tried to force on her. By the time she was nine, she had decided she wanted to be a soldier just like her father much to her parents' chagrin. As much as her father had wanted a son to follow him into the military, that was not what he wanted for his youngest princess.
Madelyn was not the rebellious teen per-say, but she did have her moments of absolute disobedience particularly when it came to her mother trying to push her towards more "gender appropriate" career choices. Maddie was not having it; she was just as capable as any man and she knew what she wanted to do. Her father thankfully realized pretty quickly that there would be no changing the girl's mind and she did in fact have what it took to make a great soldier with a lot of hard work and determination, something Madelyn had in spades. The argument between mother and daughter seemed to drag on for most of Madelyn's teens right up until she came of age and as she had been saying she would from the age of nine, signed up for the military and was found to be a prime candidate for SOLDIER.
Madelyn refused to let the rigors of the relentless training, the mako injections and all the expectations placed on her break her spirit; she would persevere through it all and become so much stronger because of it and earn the rank of SOLDIER Third Class. She was quickly sent off to the war-front in Wutai to support the Shin-ra forces already there. War was something that Madelyn found hard to stomach at times but she remembered why she signed on. She wanted to make a difference and this way she could. As much as she missed the comforts of home, she had known what she was signing up for and she was not going to desert her job just because it was hard. That just wasn't her, it would never be her. By the time it was time for Madelyn to return home, she had worked her way to SOLDIER Second Class. She was saddened by the loss of life that came with the war and also by the amount soldiers leaving their posts. One of those who left stuck out to Madelyn, he had become SOLDIER Second Class much like she had, but just up and vanished after returning home. She questioned why, but didn't believe she would ever know the answer.
Four years after the war, Madelyn's father became deathly ill and on his deathbed confessed to Madelyn his one true regret. It was a story from the war before she was a part of it. It had been in the first year and he had marked a soldier a defector and traitor and it had stuck with him. At first she didn't get why he was so distraught about until he told her the full story including the soldier's name and fate. It made Madelyn question whether she had chosen the right side in all of this. With a bit of digging she also learned the soldier her father had had eliminated as a defector was the mother of the SOLDIER Second Class who has just up and vanished after returning home from Wutai. Is that why he left? She didn't really blame him if it was. She remains with Shin-ra to this day but her faith in it is shaken and she is doubting her position as a member of SOLDIER.
