Like a parrot on the shoulder of a pirate, SWITCH sat perched upon her sweeper as it stomped through the quiet of an abandoned underground train tunnel in Sector 4.
SWITCH kept her hood up and her gas mask on as she focused on the materia clasped in her hands. A monodrive zoomed around her and her smogger was tucked away in the bag at her side. The strange group reached a large maintenance hatch in the floor and the sweeper came to an abrupt halt.
She glanced at the pseudo-soldier to her left and then at the hatch in the hopes that he would do the honors of lifting the heavy iron door for her.
SWITCH gave Quiet an appreciative thumbs up before her sweeper leapt down into the hole, landing on its feet with the booming clang of metal on concrete. The hacker liked the other cell leader quite a bit. He was a man of few words but there was a mutual respect between them that required only the barest of communication.
The maintenance tunnel ran perpendicular to the train tracks and further down the line they would encounter some large piping that was used to ventilate the mako reactor. It seemed that maintenance workers were only called down here if there were some sort of issue so for now they were able to continue on without meeting resistance or sounding any alarms. It was a dark and humid tunnel that seemed to go on as far as the eye could see. It smelled strongly of antiseptics and unnaturally large rats scurried away from the heavy clangs and blinding lights of her sweeper.
SWITCH continued on in silence but the occasional glance indicated that she would be receptive to conversation if Quiet so desired.
There was no vent in this section of the shaft that would lead into the mako reactor core so her sweeper would have to create an opening. The mechanical whirling of circular saws and the sharp grinding of metal would continue on for several minutes as the sweeper worked. Once the piping was opened things would get a little risky for SWITCH. She would need to move fast to avoid any lasting affects from exposure to mako radiation and other toxic byproducts. Quiet would probably be fine because of his previous exposure so she wasn’t really worried about his safety. She just hoped they could avoid confrontation for as long as possible.
SWITCH pulled on her gas mask before bringing out her phone and hacking the security system for this area. She wanted to make sure the duo didn’t trip any sensors on their way in and she set all cameras in the area on loop.
tag: Quiet ATB: 0/2 I used the Command ability to hack sensors and security cameras.
The respect between the two AVALANCHE leaders was mutual. SWITCH wasn't how Quiet imagined the idealised eco-rebel archetype, but she was a pro, despite her quirks. It wasn't like he could talk; he had his own quirks.
They moved along the tracks in silence. The dank, antiseptic smell bruised Quiet's nostrils. It was another element to the City that reinforced his hatred of this metal place. He pushed down the thought that, perhaps, he was just looking for things to hate, another reason to justify this crusade. He'd got this far. A devastating blow against Shin-Ra was within their grasp. Keep pushing forward.
Quiet didn't know much about SWITCH's background, nor had he even asked for her real name... but he could take a few guesses. A young Wu-Tai hacker with a hatred for Shin-Ra. When she glanced around for the second time, Quiet smiled. Unlike his usual smiles, there was a genuine hint of kindness in his expression. "Let's make them hurt. For everything."
The gene-edited fighter continued to follow SWITCH's lead for the moment. They'd gone over the plans and the route dozens of times over the past twenty-four hours. Everything was going smoothly... so far.
SWITCH gave Quiet a solemn nod as she took a deep breath, drawing the air in through the filters of her mask with a long rasping sound. She didn’t know what Shin-ra had done to this man and quite honestly she didn’t need to know the details. It was obvious that he’d been hurt and she could relate to the feeling. Her parents death was a lingering wound. Their unrealized dream left behind for her to complete.
The sweeper stepped into the ventilation shaft and moved quickly in the direction of the reactor. The air felt thick here and there was a prickle across her skin that would only get worse as they neared the source of the radiation. The hacker used her feet to push herself up onto the main body of the robot but let her legs dangle off to one side near its arm and pulled out her phone.
She eyed the moogle icon wistfully… Eh, maybe she had time for a quick round. The game popped up and her focus materia glowed on her belt as she recharged her batteries and blew off some steam.
A dim light came into view at the end of the tunnel and grew brighter as they neared the other end of the vent. The sweeper slammed into the grate causing it to buckle with a crunch. It reared back and with a second slam sent the crumpled sheet of metal clanging to the floor 20 feet below.
SWITCH looked out of the hole in the wall into a large room lined with balconies and ladders as a siren wailed in the distance. She could see the reactor core off to the right and she pointed it out to Quiet who was in charge of delivering the package.
She readied herself to deal with whatever was about to come at them as Shin-ra’s security system came to life. They had made some improvements since the last time she’d played with their toys. It wasn’t going to be as easy this time but she'd known that going in.
Quiet rolled his eyes with a tiny smirk as he followed behind the hacker and her robot. Video games at a time like this? He'd never really understood their appeal, really. A decadent escape from reality he couldn't really afford. It was the same with any fiction, really. He refused to do anything but face the world head on.
Still, she was just doing what she needed to do to keep level-headed. Quiet was doing the same, and had been doing the same for the last decade of his life. The anger that bubbled just beneath the surface drove him ever-forwards.
As one of her robots slammed into the grate, Quiet couldn't help but wince. The buckling crunch and free-falling clang-clang-clang was anything but quiet, and echoed throughout the room. Still, given the nature of the reactor, there shouldn't be anyone around to hear it...
Quiet descended into the room, his senses assaulted by an omnipresent sickly teal glow. He marched towards the reactor core, pulling out a suspicious-looking package from inside of his overcoat as he did so.
He took a long, deep breath, before securing it to the reactor. He tapped a string of numbers into the make-shift keypad on the device. He glanced back at SWITCH and gave the thumbs up. It was primed and ready for detonation. Once they'd made it far enough, she'd be able to detonate the bomb remotely. The ingredients for the bomb had been carefully prepared; it was simply powerful enough to disable the reactor beyond repair, within this secure room. No collateral.
