Autumn stood in mortified silence as Dart and Gawain made the situation worse. Obviously they weren’t going to give her Uncle the room and what did it matter whose secretary it was? It was fortunate really that the whole situation seemed to go over Azure VI’s head. She didn’t think she could handle any more of her friends commenting on this unfortunate incident.
“Mhm…” She managed sounding utterly crestfallen at his belated well wishes to her mother. He’d had to check his calendar to remember and her mother had been so distraught when her brother didn’t show up to the party. She’d had to take a pill with her cocktail just to save face in front of her other guests. That had been weeks ago.
Only Gawain knew she was the president’s niece and that was a conversation she wasn’t excited to have. She could already hear Dart making some joke about nepotism and how it was all starting to make sense now.
Autumn wanted to say something. She wanted to tell him to go home to his wife. Her poor Aunt Bernadine was probably sitting at home waiting with dinner on the table. Their kids were pretty much grown at this point and she had a bad case of empty nest syndrome. It didn’t matter what he did. Bernadine couldn’t leave him even if she knew but still… She thought about all those happy family photos and it made her sick.
She opened her mouth. It felt like she was supposed to say something to make the situation less awkward but she couldn’t think of a single thing. Gawain placed a hand on her shoulder and turned her around. Let’s just say this never happened. Autumn wanted to melt into the floor. Maybe that was a project some science team was working on upstairs. All she could do was hope.
The door slammed and she watched as the largest pile of paperwork shifted into a precarious position, teetering on the edge of stability, before an absolute avalanche of white and manila came sliding off the front side of the desk. She should have been close enough to catch it but her body wasn’t quite in sync with her brain right now.
